Health Benefits of Almond Butter

lmond butter is considered an alternative to peanut butter. As the name implies, it's the butter created when almonds are mashed into a smooth, thick paste. The texture is similar to peanut butter, but may be slightly more fluid and less creamy. A number of companies make their own almond butter, so the actual contents vary depending on how the product is made. Although some have sweeteners added and others have no additives at all, almond butter has a variety of health benefits.

Heart Healthy

Although almond butter is higher in calories like other types of nut butters, it's low in saturated fat and cholesterol. There are no trans-fats in almond butter, either. This makes it a heart-healthy option for those who have high cholesterol or heart-related ailments. In fact, the Iowa Health Study, Adventist Health Study, Nurses Health Study and Physicians Health Study all found that almond butter decreases the risk of heart disease.

Lowers Blood Sugar

In addition to decreasing the chance of getting heart disease, almond butter also may also protect against diabetes. According to The World's Healthiest Foods, it does this by moderating the rise in blood sugar after it's consumed. Typically, your blood sugar levels surge after you eat carbohydrates, fats and proteins, all of which are found in almond butter. However, research published in the journals Metabolism and Journal of Nutrition found that subjects' rise in blood sugar was significantly lower after eating almond butter. This effect also provides further protection against cardiovascular disease.

Protein

Because almond butter is created from actual almonds, it still contains a high level of protein per serving as whole almonds do. Nutrition Data, a website that provides a nutritional analysis of various foods, says that 1/4 cup of plain almond butter contains 9.5g of protein and no cholesterol. That's more than one large, whole egg, which contains 7g of protein and 215mg of cholesterol.
